Texas basketball squads beat Texas A&M in last year of rivalry

The University of Texas men (12-4, 2-1 Big 12) and women (10-4, 1-2 Big 12) basketball squads took home the win against long-time rival, Texas A&M, in what is the final season of a 117-year-old rivalry (for now).

The men's squad sealed the deal against Texas A&M (9-6, 0-3 Big 12) with a 61-51 victory. Longhorn superstar, J'Covan Brown, ended the night with 14 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Longhorn guard Julien Lewis helped lead the way with 16 points. Center Clint Chapman had a strong night with 11 points and nine rebounds.

Chris Middleton of A&M, had 19 points, along with 15 rebounds and David Loubeau had 10 points and six rebounds, but it wasn't enough to finish off the Longhorns, who had a slim lead in the closing minutes of the fourth quarter.

The UT women's squad held off their opponent as well in a 76-71 win over last year's women's basketball National Champions, Texas A&M.

Chassidy Fussell lead the way with 22 points, five rebounds and Ashley Gayle scored a career-high 17 points on her 22nd birthday.

Syndey Carter of A&M, had the game-high with 25 points and Tyra White had 19 points as they fell to Texas.

This will be the last time Texas and A&M square off in Austin, and the women's squad will play host to the last rivalry basketball game in March.

The men's squad lead 136-85 overall against A&M in basketball, which dates back to 1917 and the women's squad lead 59-23 overall against A&M women's basketball which dates back to 1975.
